Defending a Country’s Identity it’s the duty of its citizens and its governments who are elected to defend and represent their country abroad. That identity is shown by the country’s culture, its traditions, its food, and the language is how those identity traits are communicated to others. Without a language, there is no culture, and without culture, there is no country.

Languages are complex beings I would say. They can be spoken in different parts of the world and they develop their own intricacies that represent that part of the world. They form variants and they share the same core rules and vocabulary, but they create their own, which is a product of a different evolution and cultural influence. This is a reality for many languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese, and others. Most countries understand this and respect those differences since they only enrich the language itself by creating diversity and culture. Unfortunately, the Portuguese government does not and that is hurting the country’s language, culture, and identity.

Incompetenty, disrespect, and contempt

In 2009, the then-Portuguese Government approved the New Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese Language 1990 (AO90). According to them, it was aimed to “unify” the language and simplify things. There was no consultation on the matter and linguists were appalled by such an idea. The problem is that the government is imposing a change to the variant spoken in Portugal, which does not reflect the country’s culture or natural evolution. Some say they imposed the Brazilian variant on the Portuguese, the reason for such claims is that the majority of changes favour the Brazilian variant over the European variant. This is rather unnatural for the Portuguese and that is the reason causing such revolt. But let’s make it clear, this is not a war between Portuguese and Brazilians, both Portuguese and Brazilians are against it. This is a fight against a bunch of politicians who know nothing about languages and their evolution and use them as a tool for their corrupt endeavours.

The government is democratically elected to protect, defend, represent, and run the country. The Portuguese Government has done none of the above. They never represented the country or its interests, they certainly did not defend it and as per running the country, you just look at the economy and make your own conclusions. In my view, they are incompetent to run the country, they disrespect its customs and culture and they treat its citizens with contempt and that is why people have revolted against them.

The citizens’ revolt

Portuguese citizens from all walks of life spoke out about this appalling change. Those who create it don’t even know how to apply it and if you look at the Diary of the Republic, which is the official document where all government proceedings and Laws are registered, you will find a mix of rules, which make it even more confusing to read and understand. The children are learning a language they don’t identify with and this is the reality of a country with centuries of history and culture.

A group of Citizens joined forces and signed a Citizens’ Legislative Initiative (Iniciativa Legistativa de Cidadãos contra o Acordo Ortográfico – ILCAO) with thousands of signatures proposing the annulment of this absurd. It wasn’t passed. But we won’t give up. Ms. Isabel Ferreira, the author of the blog “O Lugar da Língua Portuguesa” (The Portuguese Language Place), has written an Appeal to the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, explaining why this absurd must be abolished.
